Donegal Countrywide Watermains Scheme

Replacing watermains and foul sewers in Ballybofey with precision and customer-focused solutions.

This replacement watermain project consisted of 2 phases of work.

As part of Phase 1 Conwell Conracts carried out site investigation works to determine the condition and engineering properties of the ground as well as the location, type, and size of the existing services and utilities along the proposed routes of new watermains to be laid on the N15 from Cappry into Ballybofey. These works included excavation of trial pits, a CCTV and GPS topographical survey, final pipeline design review, design of connection details and pipe fitting locations.

Phase 2 of the works was to install by Horizontal Directional Drilling and Open Cut, 3515m of 180mm HDPE watermain including installation of a PRV with Strainer, Bypass and flow meter.
125 No. customer service connections were carried out. Where meters were existing, these were removed and reinstalled in new boundary boxes. Serial numbers and readings were recorded and submitted to the local authority. We conducted quality assurance checks throughout the installation process and tested systems to verify functionality, performance, and safety. We commissioned the systems to verify that all components worked as intended.
We liaised with customers, conducting letter drops and structural surveys for service pipe connections to private property. 36No lead replacements required laying of service pipes to within 300mm of the property. In some circumstances access was required into the properties to change internal plumbing where old stop cocks could not be located outside.

18 No. main branch connections to the existing mains within the town of Ballybofey were also carried out.

This work was caried out on the road with substantial traffic management carried out by Conwell Contracts. RMO road opening license procedures were followed. Works also included temporary and permanent road reinstatement, bridge culvert crossing, testing of PE welds, testing and disinfection, bacteriological sampling and post construction survey providing digital as constructed map records.

Phase 3 of the project was to complete the installation of a replacement “live” 225mm concrete foul sewer and associated manholes through Ballybofey Town Centre.
